First motorcycles appeared in 60th XIX.  The only available at the time of the power plant was steam engine. It could be already compact enough to be mounted in motorcycle. This engine was very weak ands impractical. The first internal combustion engine was built n 1885 by German engineers. By the time motorcycles began more faster and lighter and correspondingly they began popular especially after war which narrowed car market.
Now motorcycles are good decision to escape traffic in cities, to be more attractive on the streets. On motorcycles you can ride faster than a car because of weight and engine power propotion. All of this points are good but motorcycle is not as safe as cars. In Russia is about 1500 motorcyclers victims of road accidents per year.
